Concrete Slab Injures Subway Construction Worker in New York
A construction worker on the Second Avenue line was injured last week when a concrete slab fell off of a machine and landed on his legs. According to the NY Daily News, the worker was hospitalized and in serious condition.
The accident happened near Second Avenue and E. 86th Street in the early afternoon. The worker was in a utility trench and a large concrete slab, being moved by a machine, fell on his legs.
He was transported to the hospital with injuries to his legs and back. According to a witness, you could hear the man screaming for help and he looked “red” as they pulled him from under the concrete. He remained conscious throughout.
The extent of his injuries is not known, though reports say he was initially listed in “serious but stable” condition.
Falling objects are a recipe for disaster on construction sites. Workers often work on different levels, with open air between floors. Even in single-story job sites, machines are often used to move large pieces of equipment and materials from area to area, creating a risk of falling objects.
When cranes are used, the risk is especially high, as they are lifting very heavy loads and often lifting them quite high. But even when materials fall only a short distance, horrible injury can result.
According to OSHA, a worker is at risk from falling objects when beneath cranes, scaffolds, etc., or where overhead work is being performed. OSHA mandates hardhats as a necessary protection and also makes recommendations in order to prevent sliding and falling.
But even when the most careful precautions are taken, accidents happen. They could be due to negligent safety oversight or to unstable conditions.
When you are on a New York or New Jersey job site, you expect your employer and the owner of the site to follow regulations in order to minimize your risk of injury. When an injury occurs, the responsible party should be held liable.
