Construction Accident Sends “River” of Cement Through Café
One moment it was business as usual in the café of Le Parker Meridien Hotel in New York. The next, a “river” of debris was coming through a hole in the wall. Fortunately no one was injured, but the scene shows how mistakes on a construction site have the potential to affect far more than just the construction workers.
According to NBC New York, the workers were on a job site next door to the café when they broke through the wall. A stream of debris followed, including wet cement, sending patrons of the café onto the street.
One witness who was enjoying coffee said, “We heard a cracking sound, so we thought we should get up. Then we heard a loud cracking, then we were running like mad out to 57th Street.”
The customer said they heard rustling and something falling behind the wall before the debris broke through.
The FDNY responded immediately to the accident, but aside from the mess in the espresso bar, there were no injuries.
When a site is under construction, it isn’t only those workers in the immediate area who run the risk of being injured. At any time, an equipment malfunction or mistake could send debris or equipment into a neighboring area, potentially hurting people.
Particularly in the city, where space is at a premium, many of us walk or drive by construction sites on a regular basis. Workers in the city have to be particularly cautious because of this, since they can’t require everyone in the vicinity to wear protective gear.
Sometimes, dangerous construction sites are in the same buildings where we work and live. This further increases our risks and requires the companies and workers behind the sites to be especially careful.
Whether you are passing by a site on your way to work or you are living or working in a building undergoing renovations, you are at the mercy of the workers on that site. While you can be extra careful to keep your distance, accidents on construction sites are usually out of the hands of passersby.
Fortunately, if you are hurt in such an accident, you do have rights.
