Crane Operator Was Involved In Other Accidents
The operator who was at the helm when a Manhattan crane came tumbling down has been involved in similar accidents before, according to the New York Daily News. This most recent accident resulted in the death of one man, the serious injury of another and additional injuries for three other workers.
The operator has been licensed by the state since 1996. His work record and actions are now being closely examined by the multiple agencies investigating the accident that occurred last week.
The accident happened at an MTA job site, where workers are extending the number 7 subway train. The crane boom split in two and injuries occurred from falling debris. The cable holding the boom reportedly snapped, and officials have released a preliminary statement that the accident could be related to a hoisting mechanism defect.
In the prior two cases where the same crane operator was named, crane inspections were at issue.
In one accident he was involved in, he described lackadaisical daily inspections and said he never saw a city or state inspector in the three months he was on a job. He said he only saw the owner of a crane inspect it once, after it had been involved in an injury accident, according to news reports.
