“Defects” Found In Deadly Manhattan Crane Accident
Last week we reported on a deadly crane accident in Manhattan. The crane boom came apart, killing one worker and injuring four others. The investigation into the accident has begun and problems have already been found in the crane itself.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Department of Buildings has found what may have led to the accident: “Our engineers have found defects in the hoisting system of the crane that failed, and as a result, the maintenance and operation of the crane in the days and weeks prior to this tragic accident has become the focus of our investigation.”
The crane was due for an inspection only days after the accident occurred. At its last inspection, the boom was not looked at because it was in use at the time. Instead, only the operator’s booth was inspected and found to be satisfactory. The last full inspection was conducted on July 14, 2011, when everything was found to be in sound working condition.
Work at the site, where transit officials are extending the number 7 subway line, has been suspended until further notice, and the Manhattan Transportation Authority is inspecting all cranes in use at other construction sites.
One small defect can cause a tragedy. This is why it is crucial that companies and government officials do what’s necessary to keep inspections current.
Two crane accidents in 2008 led to new safety rules and regulations for cranes in NYC. Unfortunately, those rules don’t apply to MTA projects, and therefore didn’t apply in this most recent tragedy.
