Construction Worker Killed in Truck Accident
A longtime employee of HW Alward Construction was killed earlier this month when a tree fell on the company truck he was in. According to the Basking Ridge Patch, the man was in his work truck on Mount Airy Road in Bernards Township when the accident occurred.
Bernards Township police responded to the accident at about 3 p.m., where they found the worker deceased in the truck and a tree laying across the roof. The roof of the Ford utility truck was crushed and the driver was pinned inside.
Mount Airy Road was closed for more than three hours while officials cleared the accident. The last emergency volunteers left the scene after 6 a.m.
The worker had been employed by the construction company for more than 30 years, according to officials.
It isn’t clear if he was outside of a construction site or why the truck was parked there. The tree top reportedly broke off from the trunk in what can only be called a “freak accident.”
While we commonly think of construction accidents as falls or equipment malfunctions, accidents as mundane as this one are also possible when you work in the construction field. The truth is, you never know when an accident will happen, and sometimes all the preparation in the world can’t get you ready for an extraordinary mishap.
This worker had no idea he was in immediate danger. He had no way of knowing. While on the construction site, he could take safety measures to prevent a fall or a head injury, for instance; but this accident literally came out of nowhere after 30 years on the job.
When you work in construction, you are always at risk. The safety measures you take to prevent an construction accident can make a major difference in that risk level. However, there are some things that are beyond your control. Unsafe coworkers or supervisors who allow unsafe work environments to exist are just a few examples.
If you are cautious to always follow safety guidelines, you are less likely to be involved in an accident, but you aren’t free from risk. A horrible accident can still happen, and when it does, you need someone on your side.
