How Dangerous Is Your Job in Your City?
The construction industry can be dangerous. From roofing to machinery—construction workers face serious risks each day. But, not all cities rank the same in terms of construction safety. According to a new infographic by Graphic Products and shared on EHSToday.com, smaller cities and those based on a specific industry are more dangerous than others.
“Deadliest and Safest Cities to Work In” looks at workplace deaths per million, determining the most dangerous and the safest cities to work in.
Midland, Texas, according to their information, is the most dangerous, with 85.5 workplace fatalities per one million workers annually. Those in the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade-Roseville, California area, however, are the safest, with only 5.97 fatalities per million.
While we tend to hear a lot about construction accidents in the New York and New Jersey areas, perhaps it’s only because there is so much construction going on at any given point. In this area, our population works for us, making us the 11th safest area to work in.
The New York and New Jersey areas including NYC and Long Island are ranked eleventh on the infographic, with 7.63 deaths per million each year. That’s 145 deaths per 19,015,900 total population—a pretty good rate.
Interestingly, the infographic displays what they say are the deadliest jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor. Coming in at No. 1 is fishermen, followed by logging workers, pilots, and farmers. Mining machine operators are listed at No. 5 and roofing is are ranked as the sixth most deadly profession.
Still, construction is dangerous. And while it might not be the deadliest, it’s certainly one of the most accident-prone. Fortunately, most construction accidents don’t end in death. Still, broken limbs, traumatic brain injuries, and other serious injuries can have a lasting impact on your quality of life.
Thousands of construction workers get up every morning in the New York and New Jersey areas and go to work, assuming a risk that many other professionals don’t. Sometimes, these work days can turn tragic. When that happens and you are hurt in a construction accident, you need to know that you have an advocate on your side.
