Fire at WTC Construction Site
Another construction accident hit the World Trade Center last week, according to the New York Daily News. The accident involved a fire at a storage container. While no one was injured, this marks the sixth accident at the site in under one year.
According to reports, the fire occurred at about 11:30 a.m. near the memorial center in a small storage unit. Smoke could be seen “pluming” from the container. The site was shut down as a precautionary measure. The fire reportedly burned for about 15 minutes. No one was injured, and the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
Since the start of 2012, there have been at least six different accidents at the WTC site. The construction site is massive, with many projects going on at any given time—increasing the risks exponentially.
The Daily News reports on all six accidents, providing dates and details including:
- A crane accident resulted in a load of steel being dropped 40 stories to land on a flatbed truck on February 16. No one was injured in the accident.
- On June 2, a fire occurred on the 89th floor of 1 World Trade Center. No injuries were reported.
- A worker fell on a piece of metal on June 26, piercing his side. He was transported to Bellevue Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.
- On July 13, a worker was injured when a steel beam rolled over his leg.
- A worker at 1 World Trade Center fell one story and was treated for injuries on August 11.
- A construction worker was hit in the head by a dislodged metal pipe in 4 World Trade Center on November 28.
Such accidents are not unheard of in the construction industry and are more common on larger sites—simply because there are more people, more projects, and a greater risk of injury. For the workers at the World Trade Center construction sites, these accidents are a reminder of the need for strict safety regulations and constant vigilance.
