Trenching Accidents Are Preventable
Excavating and trenching involves moving earth out of the way in order to perform work below ground level. These construction fields are inherently dangerous, and accidents are common. In most cases, however, these excavation accidents are preventable through proper safety practices and employer oversight.
The main source of accidents on trenching and excavation worksites is a cave-in. This occurs when the earth moved out of the way becomes unstable and collapses. When there are workers in the trench or in the area, they risk serious injury and even death.
The conditions that cause cave-ins could be anything from the weather’s loosening the soil to improper shoring or sheeting. Workers are kept safe through following established safety procedures, wearing protective equipment, and working for an employer or foreman who is genuinely concerned with preventing accidents. When any one of these factors is lacking, the risk of an accident is increased significantly.
According to a training manual (pdf) for the AFSCME, developed in part through OSHA standards, there are several reasons that a cave-in can occur, several of which are preventable:
- The excavation is dug in unstable soil, or in soil that has been dug in before
- There is excessive vibration from construction equipment or vehicle traffic around the excavation
- Too much weight near the sides of an excavation, most frequently from equipment or the excavated material (spoil pile) too near to the edge
- Water has collected in the excavation
- Changes in weather conditions (freezing, melting, sudden heavy rain, etc.).
A cave-in has the potential to trap workers, injuring them or even killing them. By taking precautions like moving the spoil pile at least 2 feet from the excavation and pumping any water from the trench, lives can be saved.
As a construction worker, you trust that the company you work for has your best interests in mind. But, sometimes corners are cut and people are put in unsafe working conditions. When this leads to an accident, you have rights, and you could be entitled to compensation.
