Forklift Accident Kills Worker in N.J.
Slow and low is a phrase frequently used to describe the safest way to use a forklift. Whenever the forks of a lift are elevated, the machine risks tipping, which can result in tragedy. Such is the case this week when a forklift operator in Rockaway was killed while working behind a department store.
According to the Associated Press, the 52-year-old died at the scene when the forklift topped over on him. He was attempting to make a turn with the forks raised, creating a “top heavy” machine. Speed and the angle of the turn are also said to have played a role in the tipping accident.
This workplace accident highlights just one danger of construction work involving machinery like forklifts. Many people mistakenly think they cannot be hurt by what appears to be a smaller construction machine. The truth is, however, forklift accidents are quite common.
OSHA, who will now investigate this accident, has published a large amount of information on forklift safety. According to their official website,
There are many types of powered industrial trucks. Each type presents different operating hazards. For example, a sit-down, counterbalanced high-lift rider truck is more likely than a motorized hand truck to be involved in a falling load accident because the sit-down rider truck can lift a load much higher than a hand truck. Workplace type and conditions are also factors in hazards commonly associated with powered industrial trucks. For example, retail establishments often face greater challenges than other worksites in maintaining pedestrian safety. Beyond that, many workers can also be injured when (1) lift trucks are inadvertently driven off loading docks; (2) lifts fall between docks and an unsecured trailer; (3) they are struck by a lift truck; or (4) they fall while on elevated pallets and tines.
Forklift safety is a matter of proper training and oversight. If either one of these is lacking, the risk of an accident is greatly increased.
