Jackhammer Accident Highlights Dangers of Construction Tools
Last month, a New York construction worker was seriously injured when a jackhammer fell on his feet. According to news reports, the accident occurred on the 200 block of E. 61st Street.
Tools are a common part of our lives, and it is often difficult to remember that they pose hazards. Construction tools are particularly dangerous, and workers must take steps to identify and avoid construction tool-related hazards.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Booklet on Hand and Power Tools, workers who use power tools are frequently exposed to the hazards of falling, flying, abrasive, and splashing objects, or to harmful dusts, fumes, mists, vapors, or gases.
Jackhammers are among the most dangerous power tools. They are heavy, and using them can cause fatigue and strains. OSHA recommends that workers using jackhammers wear heavy rubber grips to ensure a secure handhold. OSHA also mandates that workers operating a jackhammer must wear safety glasses and safety shoes to protect them against injury if the jackhammer slips or falls.
