WorkZoneSafety.org Provides Numerous Resources for Road Workers
The Internet is truly a never-ending source of information. But sometimes, the sheer volume can be overwhelming, and we often miss some of the most valuable sites. One such site is WorkZoneSafety.org, from the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, which says it is “the world’s largest internet resource.”
This site is packed with all things connected to road work safety. From fact sheets concerning the number of accidents to training information, news, and public awareness campaigns, the site is a useful resource for workers, employers, and the general public. According to the site,
[t]he National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse is dedicated to providing the transportation construction industry and the general public with comprehensive information to improve motorist, worker and pedestrian safety in roadway work zones.
Today, the Clearinghouse has the world’s largest online library of free information on these topics: accident and crash data, latest technologies and equipment, best practices, key safety engineer contact information, laws and regulations, worker safety training materials, research and publications, public education campaigns, Spanish language materials and educational materials for new drivers.
Since 1998, the Clearinghouse has provided assistance to more than 500,000 users from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 27 countries around the world.
Not only are there links to relevant sites, including OSHA and Federal regulations, you can also find links to state-specific laws and information. There are details about New Jersey-specific roadway laws as well.
There are free safety courses for everyone from flaggers to supervisors. You can even find printable brochures and posters, as well as training videos, manuals, and handbooks.
Data on the site indicates that in 2010 there were three fatal worksite injuries in New Jersey highway workzones. This is down from six in 2007. But despite the decline, no construction zone fatalities are acceptable.
Road workers are in a very risky position, going about their daily work within arm’s reach of speeding vehicles. And in today’s society—where everyone is in a hurry to get somewhere — it’s a wonder there aren’t more construction accidents.
