Mays Landing Construction Worker Falls to Death
Falls are the leading cause of death on construction work sites. While there are numerous other dangers in the construction industry, falls make up the biggest risk. No matter how tall the building you are working on, the potential for a fall accident to change your life is great.
A Mays Landing man was killed recently after falling from a residential construction project. According to Shore News Today, the 30-year-old construction worker was on the roof of a home on Seaspray Road when the accident occurred.
The worker fell 20 feet to the ground. Ocean City Fire Department responded and performed CPR at the scene. The worker was transported to Shore Medical Center, where he later died. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has begun an investigation.
Whenever a death occurs on a construction site, OSHA will be there to investigate. The agency takes falls particularly seriously because of their ranking as the top cause of construction deaths.
OSHA has dedicated an entire section of their website to fall education and prevention. According to them, preventing construction falls boils down to planning, providing proper equipment, and training. If anyone of these is neglected, the potential for a tragic accident like this one is compounded.
In 2010, there were 264 fall deaths on construction sites. This is out of a total fatality count of 774. All of these deaths were preventable.
As a construction worker, you must plan your work in order to minimize risk. You must take care to be cautious at every moment while working above the ground. But your employer, coworkers, and several others have responsibilities for keeping you safe.
From providing you and your supervisors with good training to giving you the right equipment to do your job, there are many ways in which the job site managers, property owners, and even your coworkers lend themselves to your safety or lack thereof.
When an accident happens and you did everything right, you need to know that you will be taken care of. Fortunately, in many cases, you could be entitled to compensation.
