Atlantic City Construction Worker Knocked Unconscious in Fall
Construction falls are the number one cause of fatalities in construction workplaces. Falls can happen from rooftops, scaffolds, or platforms. You can fall in a hole, through the floor, or off of a structure. While many people think of falls from great heights as being the worst, bad falls – even fatal ones — can also happen at lower heights.
Recently, a construction worker in Atlantic City fell just four feet off of a scaffold and suffered a head injury.
According to the Press of Atlantic City, the worker was on the Margaritaville worksite when the accident happened. He was hanging drywall. It isn’t clear if he was on a ladder or scaffold at the time, but this is likely the case.
The short fall knocked the worker unconscious. When he came to, he had a gash on the back of his head. He was then transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical City Campus where his condition was unknown.
People have suffered traumatic brain injuries and been put in comas from falls of less than four feet. People have tripped, hit their heads on curbs and never woken up. Accidents happen.
Preventing these accidents is a matter of proper training, the right safety equipment, and a work environment that fosters safety and accident prevention. Without any one of these, the risk of an accident’s occurring is significantly increased.
This particular accident happened on a $35 million new construction job. But falls and other accidents happen on much smaller projects all the time. A kitchen remodel or residential roofing job could just as easily end in serious injury.
As a construction worker, you depend on your employer and the owner of the project to keep you in a safe environment. It doesn’t matter if they are a multimillion-dollar company or a small family business. Keeping you safe includes providing you with the proper tools to do your job and ensuring you, your coworkers, and supervisors are well-versed in construction safety and accident prevention.
