Jersey City Construction Worker Hit by Falling Concrete
Details are sparse, but a Jersey City construction worker was injured while working on the Pulaski Skyway a few weeks ago. He was struck by falling concrete. While falling objects are common in construction work, being struck by heavy concrete can result in serious and life-threatening injuries.
According to The Jersey Journal, the worker was in a bucket when the accident happened, working under the Skyway. A large slab of concrete fell from the Skyway and hit him in its descent. Initially, reports indicate, he was wedged between two beams, but he was extricated before emergency responders arrived.
One witness close to the scene said the worker underwent surgery after the accident, though his exact injuries and condition are unknown.
Long-term construction work is going on at the Pulaski Skyway as it is hoped to be replaced with more ramps added to ease congestion on Routes 1 and 9.
When you work under anything, there is a risk of being hit by falling objects. While hard hats can offer some protection, a falling slab of concrete is a little too much for a hardhat to handle.
There are other ways to protect yourself and other workers from falling objects. This mainly has to do with securing those items which are at risk of falling and not working directly underneath anything that is unstable.
OSHA recommends stacking materials to prevent sliding, falling, or collapse. They also say that using toeboards and debris nets can protect workers below. Safety goggles and face shields can protect workers from flying debris and objects as well.
Barricading hazardous areas and blocking entry while overhead work is being done is another safety measure that can protect workers and bystanders.
Still, even when precautions are taken, accidents can occur. Falling objects are likely to cause serious injury to the head in particular. And traumatic brain injuries can result in lasting damage.
