Queens Construction Worker Dies in Fall Accident
A 42–year-old Queens man was killed while working last week. The New York Daily News reports that the man was working on an Astoria apartment building when the accident occurred.
The Broadway construction site was the scene of the fatal accident. It was a freezing cold morning, and the man was working on the first floor when he fell.
He reportedly fell through a hole in the floor and fell toward the basement, 15 feet below. On his fall, he struck his head on a steel girder, say cops, which ultimately delivered the fatal injury.
The man, whose name is being withheld, was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died.
Work on the building has been suspended during a Department of Buildings investigation into the accident. Centex Builders, the general contractor for the site, could not be reached for comment.
This isn’t the first time that particular site was in the news. Last year, surrounding neighbors complained that the work going on was destabilizing their buildings’ foundations, say city records.
Fall accidents are some of the most common construction accidents there are. The potential for serious and even fatal injuries is high in accidents like this, particularly when a worker falls down from one floor to another or from up high to the ground below.
Safeguards are often in place to prevent these accidents. The investigation will, no doubt, look to ensure these safeguards were being used and everything possible was done to prevent such a tragedy from occurring.
While fatal fall accidents happen, serious injury falls are more common. You don’t have to work on a high rise to be seriously injured in a fall. As a matter of fact, you could trip over debris or equipment and end up with a broken arm or a head injury.
The risk of a fall accident is present at nearly every job site—even in single-story construction.
Whether you work in roofing, welding, or general labor, you run the risk of falling. Your employer and immediate supervisor can help reduce these risks by offering proper training and equipment. But when this doesn’t happen and you are hurt as a result, someone must be held accountable.
