Two Construction Workers Killed in Highway Accident
Two men, working on Pulaski Highway in Maryland were killed in a construction zone accident, exemplifying just how dangerous highway construction work can be, no matter what state’s roads you are working on.
According to WBAL.com, the workers were setting up cones in the left lane, in a marked zone. The driver of a Ford Focus was initially in the right lane, but veered into the left lane after crossing into the construction zone.
The driver refused medical treatment and was taken into custody by State Police for questioning. Both workers were pronounced dead at the scene.
Accident investigators said not only were the workers putting cones up, but there was a moveable, flashing sign indicating the work zone. Charges against the driver are pending.
Driver must be cautious when traveling through construction zones. Not only are workers present, but they are often working close to passing traffic. A distracted, sleepy, or drunk driver could quickly find themselves on the wrong side of the cones, and tragedy like this can occur.
Construction workers, for their part, are always on their toes—working in a field where they must watch for their own safety and watch to ensure drivers and other workers are also being safe. Not only do workers run the risk of being involved in an accident when they sidestep safety precautions, but also when others take shortcuts.
Accidents like this one are why many states have such stringent laws regarding traffic violations in construction zones. Keeping road construction workers safe should be a top priority for their employers, drivers, law enforcement officials, and the workers themselves.
A highway construction accident has the potential to be fatal simply because workers are often unprotected when compared with drivers, sheltered by their vehicles. When tragedy like this strikes, you have rights.
