NYC Scaffolding Falls Often End in Serious Injury
A construction worker at a Fort Hamilton building was injured when he fell 12 feet this past week. According to DNAinfo.com, the worker incurred multiple non-life-threatening injuries in the fall and was transported to Maimonides Hospital.
Though this fall was from a height of only 12 feet, any New York or New Jersey construction site fall can end in serious injuries. How you fall, what you land on, and the protective gear you are wearing can all impact how severe your injuries are after falling.
Because scaffoldings are frequently used in construction and post a general fall risk, there are many regulations on their use and assembly.
OSHA, a division of the U.S. Department of Labor, says that there were 54 deaths in 2009 that were attributed to falls from scaffolds and staging. About 72 percent of workers who were injured in scaffolding falls attributed the accident to the support’s giving way or the worker’s slipping or being struck by an object. Preventing these occurrences is the key to fall prevention.
How these platforms are constructed and maintained is of upmost importance to their safety. Poorly constructed scaffoldings are obviously a risk factor in construction accidents. Likewise, scaffolds and stagings that aren’t properly maintained can become accident scenes.
Falls can be fatal. And even when they result in non-life-threatening injuries, the results can be long-lasting. Months and even years of physical therapy and rehabilitation can be required after a serious fall—and even then, you may never feel the same again.
