Concrete Barrier Falls, Kills Jersey Worker
Construction worker Chris Burch of West Berlin, N.J., was killed when a concrete barrier fell on him while on a Bethlehem road construction site. The accident is currently under investigation and details are limited.
According to The Express-Times, the accident happened when a 2,000-pound concrete barrier fell on Burch. He suffered severe trauma and went into cardiac arrest as a result. While transporting him to the local hospital, the ambulance crew was performing CPR.
The work site was on Route 412 between I-78 and Daly Avenue, where the road is being widened from two to five lanes. Burch’s employer, HRI, is contracted with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for the project, which is expected to run through 2015.
Soon after the accident, HRI released a statement:
“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at HRI are with family and friends of Chris Burch, an employee of HRI,” Renfrew said in a statement released by the company late this morning. “HRI places the highest value on the safety of its workers and the traveling public. The company’s focus at this time is offering condolences to the family of Chris Burch. All of us at HRI extend our heartfelt sympathies to Chris’ family as we share in their grief for the loss of our fellow employee.”
When working with materials that weigh more than several hundred pounds, the risks are great and extra precautions must be taken. Though this sort of accident is rare when compared with a fall accident, they do happen and can be particularly traumatic.
Falling debris or falling equipment can cause serious injury to anyone who happens to be in its way. Head trauma, back injuries, and even deaths can occur. These sorts of injuries can create lasting consequences and astronomical medical costs.
As you attempt to heal following an accident like this, you don’t only experience physical pain, but you feel the stress of going from a healthy and employable person to someone who may have difficulty with the simplest of tasks.
Fortunately, if you are injured in a construction accident, you have options.
