New York Worker Falls Down Elevator Shaft, Survives
When you think of someone falling several stories down an elevator shaft, you don’t think of them surviving the fall accident. But a worker in New York City has done just that, though he is still listed in critical condition.
According to the New York Post:
A hardhat barely survived a 75-foot plunge down an elevator shaft today at the construction site of Fordham Law’s new library and dormitory complex.
Anastassios Intzeyiannis, 41, was doing masonry work on the project at 158 W. 62nd St. shortly after 11 a.m. when he somehow lost his balance.
“He fell three stories, hit something, and then fell two more stories,” said Bob Scott, 52, an ironworker on the project.
He struck his head on a plank and was knocked out cold, sources said.
Intzeyiannis, a Howard Beach resident, was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital in critical condition with internal bleeding.
He was wearing a harness when he fell, but it wasn’t properly secured, according to the city investigators.
The Department of Buildings later issued three violations to construction manager Gotham Construction and ordered a full stop-work order on the site.
Fall accidents are often the most severe, commonly ending in death. But even when a worker survives, there is usually a long road to recovery.
The risks of such accidents are great, and they account for a large percentage of construction accidents across the country. From falling off of scaffolding to falling in a hole, construction sites offer many fall risks.
With accidents like this one come costly medical bills, physical pain, and often emotional trauma. This isn’t the type of injury you just “get over.”
