New York Contractor Injured In Roof Fall
On Monday, a contractor was transported via helicopter to a local hospital for medical treatment after sustaining injuries from a roof fall. New York State Police responded to the scene, but could not release the contractor’s name.
Around 10 a.m. Monday, residents of Herkimer, NY, reported seeing a man fall from a roof while working on a construction project at a Chevrolet dealership on Route 28. According to onlookers, the man appeared to be severely injured. A helicopter landing zone was then cleared in the Village of Herkimer, and the man was transported for medical treatment.
Unfortunately, falls are the leading cause of worker fatalities in the construction industry. Each year, between 150 and 200 workers are killed and more than 100,000 are injured on average as a result of falls at construction sites.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), accidents involving falls are generally complex events involving many factors. But there are a number of ways individuals and employers can prevent falls from happening. The most common way to avoid falls is to install a fall protection system, and to train workers in using the system.
In fact, under OSHA regulations, employers have a duty to protect workers against falls. OSHA requires all employers to assess the workplace to determine if the surfaces on which employees are to work can safely support workers. Then, if a fall hazard is present, employers must provide an approved fall protection system.
