Falling Objects Injure Greenwich Village Construction Worker
A construction worker in Greenwich Village was injured last week when wood fell on his legs. According to DNAinfo.com, the worker was part of “heavy construction” that had been going on for the past several months.
Officials said a male worker, believed to be in his 30s, was awake and conscious after the accident, which occurred at 146 W. 13th St. between Sixth and Seventh avenues.
The worker was taken to Bellevue Hospital. Officials had no further details on his injuries.
A truck driver who witnessed the accident said workers at the site were loading wood into the building when a hand truck overturned, spilling wood onto the worker’s legs.
Falling debris is a common safety risk on job sites. As you deal with construction materials and tools, moving them throughout the site, you always run the risk of dropping them or having them fall on you. Depending on the equipment, the injuries can be catastrophic.
The purpose of a hard hat is to protect the head when accidents occur. But, when something falls on your lower body, there may be nothing to protect you from the damaging results.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration:
You are at risk from falling objects when you are beneath cranes, scaffolds, etc., or where overhead work is being performed. There is a danger from flying objects when power tools, or activities like pushing, pulling, or prying, may cause objects to become airborne. Injuries can range from minor abrasions to concussions, blindness, or death.
Construction injuries can happen when objects fall from even low areas, as this Greenwich Village accident shows. You don’t have to be under high equipment for materials to fall on your feet or legs, accidents that can easily result in broken bones.
