“Raining Shards of Glass” After 4 WTC Crane Slips
A crane accident at the 4 World Trade Center tower last week left shards of glass raining on the street below. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident, though it likely shook some workers up.
According to Firehouse.com:
A construction crane slipped as it lifted a beam up the south side of 4 World Trade Center Wednesday morning, shattering windows and raining shards of glass onto streets 45 stories below, officials said.
Panes on the skyscraper’s 45th and 46th floors were broken in the 11:30 a.m. accident, a New York Fire Department spokesman said. He said the department would likely not investigate because no injuries were reported. The crane’s weight apparently shifted as the beam was lifted, the department said.
About a dozen fire department vehicles and 60 firefighters responded to the accident, and glass and other debris were cleared from the ground.
The slip was likely caused by a sudden gust of wind, according to Construction.com, which said the steel beams shattered windows on the 45th and 46th floors. Immediately after the accident, steel lifts were suspended on the site to review “protocols for evaluating weather conditions.”
Anytime an accident occurs, whether or not there is injury involved, it presents an opportunity for workers to do better. An accident doesn’t have to hurt someone to move work to a grinding halt on a construction site. Particularly on sites where that are committed to safety, any slip-up requires safety standards and protocols to be reviewed.
Crane accidents in particular can be tragic. Had this building been occupied, for instance, or had the street below not have been closed, the results could have been much more serious. Fortunately, safety measures were in place to reduce the likelihood of injury.
