Four Contractors Fined For New Jersey Construction Site Fall Hazards
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has fined four contractors for exposing workers to fall hazards, after inspecting a 20-story building under construction in Jersey City. The fines total $463,350.
Altura Concrete, Inc., and Nathil Corp., both concrete contractors, were cited with five willful violations. A willful violation is one committed with intentional knowing or voluntary disregard for the law’s requirements. Those citations include failure to protect workers from fall hazards created by open sides and failure to protect workers from fall hazards created by misuse of stepladders. Both companies were also cited with nine serious violations, including failure to provide protective equipment and failure to protect workers from fall hazards created by open holes.
White Diamonds Properties, the general contractor of the project, was cited with two willful violations, including failure to protect workers from fall hazards. The company was also cited with five serious violations, including improper storage.
Finally, Blade Contracting, a masonry contractor, was cited with three serious violations, including failure to properly inspect scaffold components for defects.
