New Jersey Ironworker Falls into Acid-Filled Tank
Last month, 44-year-old Martin Davis fell into a giant tank of nitric acid. It was only thanks to his co-workers that he made it out quickly, according to Reuters. The fall happened at a metal tube manufacturing plant in Clifton on May 7.
It was Davis’ and other construction workers’ first day on that job site. They were there to replace the roof. It was the old roof that gave way and caused Davis to fall 20 to 40 feet (depending on the news source) into the vat of nitric acid. The acid was diluted to 40% to 70% of its full strength, but it was still strong enough to cause serious burns.
Davis’ co-workers teamed up to rescue him. Though they downplayed their heroism, the fire chief initially said one co-worker jumped in after Davis to save him. Later reports clarified that the workers actually reached into the acid from the side of the tank to complete the rescue.
The tank was about 30 feet wide and four feet deep. Immediately following the fall, Davis reportedly stood up in shock, trying to find a way out. When emergency responders arrived, they found Davis on the ground with his co-workers next to him. They immediately removed his clothing and doused him with water to rinse off the remaining acid.
Later reports from the Clifton Journal updated Davis’ condition, stating he was being kept in a medically induced coma. He was suffering from a punctured lung, broken hip bones, a broken pelvis, broken ribs, and burns on his legs.
“He’s in serious critical condition. They’re afraid the pain will be unbearable if they take him out of the coma too soon. In his current condition, they can’t do too much,” said his mother.
As we reported last week, falls are one of the most common construction accidents in the state of New Jersey and across the country. While Davis fell through a roof, you don’t even have to be above ground in order to experience the injuries associated with a bad fall. Tripping over equipment or falling into a hole can similarly have tragic results.
