Construction Worker Falls to Death in SoHo
Twenty-eight-year-old Adrien Zamora was wrapping up his first day on the job when tragedy struck. According to the NY Daily News, he fell three stories from scaffolding and to his death.
Workers for Bras-Al Construction Corp., based on W. 34th Street, were working in a restoration job on an 11-story luxury loft apartment building on the Mercer St. side of 450 Broome St.
A coworker reported that they were just packing up to go home for the day when the accident happened. Zamora reached over a railing while standing on the stairs, according to a source with the Department of Buildings. He tried reaching to turn over a plank when he fell. He was not strapped into a harness at the time.
It’s difficult to say whether inexperience played any role in the fall. Most scaffold workers stay strapped into a harness whenever they are above ground. But Zamora may have been unstrapped because he was preparing to leave.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, falls are the leading cause of construction accident deaths. Whether falling from scaffolding or tripping over a tool, your life can change in a matter of seconds.
Even a short fall can end with serious injuries like broken bones and traumatic brain injury. While safety precautions are always taken on construction sites, sometimes they aren’t enough, and sometimes they are skirted for the sake of a rushed job.
Even with the safest construction workers around, a New York or New Jersey job site can still be the scene of a serious accident. Any fall from height can cause permanent damage or fatal injuries. If you are hurt in such an accident, you could be entitled to compensation for all of the damage done.
